Here’s an update from Club Treasurer Conn Russell on the money raised for our two chosen charities at this year’s Tour of Strangford sportive.

Huge thanks again to all who took part in any way at the Tour of Strangford Charity Sportive on 13th September. We’re delighted to say that we raised a total of £1500, to be split between the 2 nominated local charities detailed below.

The Alzheimer’s Society Northern Ireland

Thanks so much for raising such a fantastic amount of much-needed funds for The Alzheimer’s Society!

As you may know, dementia affects over 800,000 people in the UK alone with numbers set to rise to one million by 2021. Alzheimer’s Society provides information and support for people with all forms of dementia and those who care for them. We run quality care services, fund research, advice professionals and campaign for improved health and social care and greater public understanding of dementia.

Support from people taking part in fundraising will help to ensure that our valuable work continues. We are therefore delighted that you are supporting us in this way.

The Danny Mills Heart Foundation

Can I just say a really big thank you to all who took part in the cycle on Sunday. I once again have been overwhelmed by the generosity of your club for the extremely kind donation, it’s amazing! Here is some information on the charity.

The main aim of the Danny Mills Heart Foundation is to raise awareness of sudden adult death syndrome (SADS) – specifically in 14-35 year olds. The term SADS is generally used to describe the sudden death of any young person who otherwise appeared fit and healthy and is thought to be responsible for up to 500 deaths in the UK each year. Nearly all cases of SADS appear to directly relate to undiagnosed heart conditions, some of which can be inherited conditions that run in families. The foundation raises awareness, contributes to medical research and places defibrillators in various venues around Northern Ireland.

Venues we have placed defibrillators include:

  • Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College
  • Eddie Irvine Sports
  • PlayBall at Stormont
  • Rosemount Rec FC
  • Pickie Bowling Club
  • Bangor Abbey Boxing Academy
  • Glastry College
  • Clandeboye Primary School

We also donated three to North Down Borough Council to be placed at local council sports facilities
