75th Anniversary Ideas

Charlie Henderson – track champion in the 1940s, founder member of the club in 1944, and winner of the 2004 Ards Borough Council Special Achievement Award for his contribution to cycling and Ards CC over 60 years. Ards CC used to run races on the airfield in the 1940s. Could we resurrect this…?

Ards Cycling club will be 75 years old in 2019 and we’re keen to run some special events to mark the anniversary.

At the moment we have more ideas than we could possibly organise, so we’d love to get your feedback on the sort of events you’d like to take part in.

Let us know your thoughts on the ideas below, or any other ideas you have. There will be a chance to this at the club AGM on 28th November, and we’re also planning to run an email poll to gather opinions – keep an eye out for it.

Here are the ideas suggested so far –

  • A black tie club awards night with a special guest of honour.
  • One (or more) film nights, perhaps featuring a classic like the recently reviewed “A Sunday in Hell“, or the Academy Award winning “Breaking Away“, or… you tell us!

  • A night at the races – A great way to raise funds while enjoying a flutter on the horses.

  • Run a second Sportive with a new twist. What about a “sunday in hell”, taking in some of the great off road lanes and loanies in County Down? Or a “Nocturne Sportive” with a big fry up breakfast at the end? Or even a two day sportive…?
  • Could we add some novel new events to the Town Centre Races? What about a tandem race? Or a 4 station team pursuit – Ards CC versus 3 other local clubs? Or a penny farthing demonstration event?

  • Could we promote some kids events? Roller racing? or another closed circuit event?

Here’s looking forward to your views, and to a great 2019!
